Doing something radical after Easter

Easter is quickly coming upon us. You know ’cause the candy has been in the stores for a while now. It has been a long time since I got into Easter candy. One year I gave up all sugar for Lent. No candy that year.

I am thinking about doing something radical this year after Easter. Lots of folks do a fast before, maybe I’ll do one after. The focus of the fast would be to ask Jesus to make the power of His resurrection known and ‘touchable,’ real, in the church. There are 40 days between Easter and Pentecost. Humm…could be a very interesting spiritual journey.

Thinking Differently and Biblical Truth

Rendering of human brain.

I love to talk about innovation and to be innovative in my field. Part of my work is also with the Bible and in theology. Admittedly it is less threatening to be innovative in Christian mission and research. But they all require creativity and innovation. For me, the reason why Bible study and theology can be so creative and innovative is because they touch on the lives of people and must be applied to every day life. It is true that in the mind of God a Bible passage has one clear interpretation. But I think it is equally true that the specific application of that interpretation can be creatively applied to each individual life. Innovation. Human life and living makes Bible application and theology a wonderland of innovation and creativity as we strive with all we are to understand the interpretation God has for His text. Here is a great video from Ted.com that shows how different we really are. Two minutes and a wow: Derek Sivers: Weird, or just different.

False Prophets and Foundations Presentation

False Prophets and Foundations Presentation

Jesus talked about identifying false prophets and about the foundations we have for our lives. Play the presentation below and think through the passage.

Evaluating Jesus’ Relationships Part 1

Evaluating Jesus’ Relationships Part 1

By understanding how Jesus related to the people around him as described in the four gospels we can understand how He treats people today. That’s the idea. Here is how I think we can evaluate them. Take a look at it and make your comments either here or on Facebook. Thanks for your help.

The chart is 3D and contrasts the following things on a 1 to 10 scale

  • Self (inward, disregard of others) 1 2 3…10 Other People (Disciples, Friends, God)
  • Aggressive (Talkative, Physical) 1 2 3…10 Passive (Quiet, Inactive)
  • Closed (Uninformative, Unfriendly) 1 2 3…10 Open (Informative, Friendly)

Putting it on a 3D scale means that means that the cleansing of the temple would be an Aggressive 8, Open 7, Other People 9.  The prayer in the garden before His betrayal would be a Self 5, Open 10, Aggressive 6.

I know this is a bit of an odd idea and I made up the chart so if you have another idea I would love to hear it.

3 Qs: where, how much and who

The question is “where” not how much.

5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”  6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wagesa would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” (jn 6:5)

The test, that was about who Jesus was.

In my life situation I often ask ‘where’ and ‘how much’ but it all boils down to who Jesus is and how I am related to Him.
