Imagine Church Differently Notes on Alan Hirsch

Imagine Church Differently Notes on Alan Hirsch

Today I watched Alan Hirsch give a talk at the Velocity Conference in Georgia. It was a great video and worth the 47 minutes to watch and take notes on.  He made a pretty compelling argument for his statement, “The battle for the future of the church in the West will be won at the level of imagination or it will be lost at that level.”  I was also impressed that he was convinced that Americans and their entrepreneurial / apostolic spirit will be the ones to take this to the world. He said things like, ‘If the church is to be saved in the West then it will be the Americans who do it, but only after some deep thought and prayer.’ Now, some of my European friends might be a bit skeptical of the first though not of the last. That aside, I was impressed by what he said and about how he challenged us to be on mission for God in our own country so that we could come up with a solution to help the unchurched. The video can be found here at ChurchPlanters.com. I have also embedded my mindmap of the talk below. It is in xmind format.

So, download my notes, and enjoy Alan’s talk.

Praying for people as they learn to follow Jesus

Praying for people as they learn to follow Jesus

Sometimes we do not really know what to pray for people who are not following Jesus or have not placed their faith in Him. What follows is a list of things you could pray for family, friends and strangers. It is a great list to use during prayer walks.  Remember that many people will feel a sense of belonging to a group of Christ followers before they themselves decide to follow Jesus. These are some things you can pray for your friends as they hang out with you and learn what it is like to follow Jesus.

1. That God Draws Them to Himself

John. 6:44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him…”

2. That They Seek to Know God

Acts 17:27 “God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.”

Deuteronomy 4:29 “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

3. That They Believe the Scriptures

1 Thessalonians 2:13 “And we also thank God continually because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God…”

Romans 10:17 “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”

4. That Satan is Kept from Blinding them to the Truth

Matthew 13:19 “When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart.

2 Corinthians 4:4 “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

5. That the Holy Spirit works in them

John 16:8-11 “When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”

6. That They Believe in Christ as Savior

John 1:12 “”Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes in him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, he has cross over from death to life.”

7. That They Turn From Sin of unbelief

John 3:18 “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

8. That God Send Someone to Lead Them to Christ

Romans 10:14-15 “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!””

Matthew. 9:37,38 “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’”

9. That They Confess Christ as Lord

Romans 10:9, 10 “…if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

10. That They Yield All to Follow Christ

2 Corinthians 5:15 “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”

Philippians. 3:7, 8 “But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish that I may gain Christ…”

11.  That They Take Root and Grow in Christ

Colossians 2:6, 7 “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness

Missional short video:great explanation

Missional short video:great explanation

This is a wonderfully clear explanation of the basic difference between traditional church and missional church.

Missional work a door to liberalism…WHAT?

Missional work a door to liberalism…WHAT?

Just finished reading Jonathan Leeman’s article called “Is the God of the Missional Gospel Too Small?” his answer is yes, the missional movement as well as evangelism and missions are the door to liberalism.

He does what a lot of conservative folks do, he mistakes the part for the whole. And pet ideas or ways of expressing theology that if not addressed “properly” make a person, church or movement liberal. I consider myself to be conservative (I’m a PBU and DTS grad) and deeply missional. So I think Jonathan needs to fine tune a bit and enter into the missional discussion instead of dashing the whole thing as liberal. Here is why.

First it must be said that every movement of any group has its left and right wings. There are conservative and liberal Republicans, there are blue dog democrats and the new democrat coalition, there are liberalish and conservativish Southern Baptists as well as theologically conservative while socially liberal emerging church folk along with the theologically liberal variety too. The list goes on.

Jonathan has some food for thought so let me summarize what I think he is saying. He says that the missional movement has a small God because it focus on social justice and not the glory of God tarnished at the fall of man. He says that missional folk don’t believe in a literal hell but believe in annihilation or “mere absence of God – the sinner receiving what he asked for, and nothing more.” This, he says, leads to a de-emphasis on conversion preferring rather to focus on conversation and the positive transformation of societal structures. This brings him to say that the Biblical storyline has been reduced to social justice and creation care. His point in this last part is that everyone, even Hollywood stars, can see these problems and that believers though they can have these as good projects must only undertake them as tools for evangelism.

Now, in all of this he has some interesting thoughts on Jesus’ view on helping the poor vs worship and on the health of society without the personal and individual transformation that the gospel brings.

Really, for me, the section titled “Reductionistic Biblical Storyline” was the most interesting.

On a lighter side, at one point he lifts up John Stott but forgets that Stott is an annihilationist. Which brings me back to the point that every group has its conservatives and liberals and even the conservatives can be liberal about some things while liberals can surprise conservatives by being even more conservative about other things. Our world may be black and white but sometimes the pixels on the image are mixed up so much that they look a lot like grey, well maybe there is grey.

The mixing of the pixels is what Jonathan leaves out. I know missional people who are weak on hell and very strong on personal salvation and the deep transformation of life long discipleship.

It is, after all, the evangelists, missionaries and missional church planters who are sharing the gospel so that people are made into life long disciples of Jesus and gathered into churches. I think Jonathan has forgotten that.

Missional: Person rather than plan (incarnation)

Missional: Person rather than plan (incarnation)

“One of my frustrations in church world has always been that leaders seem to always be seeking a plan rather than a person.” – Perry Noble from his blog post “Seeing HIM Makes It Clearer!!!
program_vs_discipleship2

Perry goes on to say, “We want to know ‘how’ to make things grow! We come up with cool series titles. We brainstorm how to increase attendance. We come up with strategies for success in regards to seeing the charts go up and to the right…” He is not saying that he’s against programs just for Jesus-led programs.

But I think he does not go far enough. Perry wants to see us make our program based on what Jesus wants. Kind of a What Would Jesus Program (WWJP)  kind of thing. That is super, but it needs to be What Would The Body Of Christ That Is Our Missional Community Do In Our Context (WWTBOCTIOMC-LOL) kind of thing. I say ‘context’ and not ‘local’ because our context can include the interests of our missional community to serve Christ non-locally.

My point is, however, that if we focus on WWJP then we are thinking mostly of the Jesus in the robe with the sandals doing His Father’s will with passion. He is our example and our Savior. However, Jesus has made our context different than what His disciples had while He walked the earth. We are now His body on the earth and so the two WW should be followed by BOC or Body Of Christ since we are His hands and feet now. He filled us with His Spirit, gave us the gifts and the gifted so that we, in our context, could live out His life for people here.  We live His life for Every Person (Live H.E.L.P.) in our context.

The missional community or church should have programs that give expression and yield the fruit of our collective applied gifts in our context.
